Winter Driving Comes with its own set of challenges, keeping your battery healthy so you don't get stranded is one of them.
Do - If you don't park in a garage use a block heater (-10 or colder only!) to keep your engine warm. A warm engine needs less power to start and puts less strain on your battery. Don't - take short trips. It's tempting to make your trips out in the cold as short as possible but lots of short trips instead of one or two longer ones don't give your battery enough time to recharge efficiently.
Do - Keep Your battery terminals clean, a dirty battery post can increase electrical resistance between the connections which makes your battery work harder
Don't - Put off replacing a dying battery. A Battery typically lasts 3-5 years. If suddenly starts are a little slower, you've needed a boost and didn't leave the lights on or your battery looks misshapen or has a lot of corrosion around the posts it's time to get your battery checked and replaced if needed.
Do- Make sure you have the right size battery for your vehicle and that your vehicle is equipped with a block heater.
Stay Safe Winnipeg!
